I am a child of the King.
At the very core of our identity is a deep desire to belong. We were made for community. We were made to share our lives with people around us. Often in life, we are searching for acceptance. We want to be a part of “the gang”, popular and well-liked. Have you ever thought about where this desire comes from?
Early on as a child, my dad taught me that I was “accepted” by God. I didn’t understand it at the time. I was like okay, yes, of course, God “accepts” me. It wasn’t until I lived a little more of my life that I realized what that truly meant. God, the Father, the creator of the universe, the maker of all, chose me. Yes me, and YOU. He chose us to be his children. 2 Corinthians 8:18 says “And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty.” 1 John 1:12 says, “but to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”.
Through faith, we are Children of God.
God is your father.
Your dad.
When I look at God as my father, it takes him from far away, out in the “heavens” in the sky, to sitting with me on my couch. Personal, relational, and very present in my life. When God is seen as close: within me, beside me, all around me, I feel less alone. I feel safe. I feel like I belong.
I had a great dad. He was very loving and present in my life. He cared for me and my siblings and taught us, as I said before, that our Heavenly Father accepts us, He views us as significant and we are secure in Him, as his children.
I know not everyone grew up with a loving father figure, or even if you did have a dad present, it may not have been the most loving experience. This can often leave scars and hurts that block us from seeing God as our Father. The good news is, is that God is God, perfect, consistent, loving, kind, generous, forgiving, and much much more. This is who wants to be your father. He wants to show you HIS love, HIS forgiveness, HIS grace, HIS peace, HIS truth, and HIS faith.
He wants to be Your protector, provider, and comforter.
He wants to be your friend.
Our Father is not only Creator, Maker, and King, he is Redeemer.
He purchased us with a price, his blood.
He redeemed us from the curse of sin and death.
He gave us new life.
He gave us HIS spirit.
At the very core of our identity in Christ is that we are children of God.
A child is an heir to their father.
My father is the king of kings, the Lord of Lords, he calls me his son (daughter).
He welcomes me into his family.
I belong.
As I continue to understand what it means to be his child, heir, son, or daughter, I find more peace, more security, and more love. I feel wanted and chosen. When I give my Father his rightful place in my mind and heart, I start to live in this truth, and my perspective changes. My “need” for acceptance from others and need to belong shifts.
Instead of trying to “gain acceptance” from other people, I enter into life from a place of already knowing I am accepted and secure. I look to give, share and love others. The inner drive to gain and please ceases, and I can be present to the people I am with and the moment I am in. I don’t have to earn, please or try to be perfect. I can rest in knowing who God is, and who he says I am.
I am a child of the king, he’s my Father, my dad. He says “I’m in.”
